OUR CURRICULUM
Vision:
At our school, we aim to nurture confident, resilient learners who feel a strong sense of belonging. Our curriculum encourages curiosity and creativity, fostering a love of learning that inspires each child to explore new ideas and develop their potential. Through a supportive and inclusive environment, we strive for academic excellence, helping every student grow into a thoughtful, independent thinker ready to face future challenges with enthusiasm and determination.
CURRICULUM DRIVERS:
Values and aspirations:
The following four words underpin our hopes and aims for all pupils:
RESPECT – RESPONSIBILITY – RELATIONSHIPS - RESILIENCE
- At Heron Hill Primary School, we respect each child in our school for who they are, and we treat them with fairness and honesty. We celebrate our uniqueness as each of us is an individual piece of the Heron Hill jigsaw puzzle.
- We provide our pupils with a creative and engaging curriculum that will ensure they have the knowledge and skills they need to set them on the path to becoming lifelong learners.
- Our curriculum ensures pupils are able to respect and work with others: respecting differences, showing respect and building acceptance. It also encourages children to consider their responsibility for both their locality and the wider world in which they live; striving to make a positive contribution and growing to be environment-aware.
- Representation, Equality and Diversity underpin our curriculum offer. Everyone is welcome in our school; valued for who they are; respected for their beliefs and differing cultural heritage.
- We have high aspirations for every pupil we serve; we will prepare them for life beyond our school, ensuring they can be a successful as possible in their future endeavours.
Reading and vocabulary acquisition:
Reading is an essential life skill for all. Being able to read is the foundation of all future learning. Our planned curriculum ensures that:
- Pupils learn the skills and sound knowledge needed to read fluently.
- Reading is modelled to the children regularly by staff who also love reading.
- The growth of pupils’ vocabulary, and the understanding of this, is a key focus for our curriculum.
Our planned curriculum aims to:
- Teach appropriate skills and knowledge in the correct year group, in line with NC expectations.
- Equip pupils with the knowledge they need and the skills that will enable them to enhance and apply.
- Build on knowledge and skills content from previous year groups, whilst also linking to those which are yet to come in subsequent year groups.
- Encourage and develop critical thinking in our pupils via ‘questions for learning’. We aim to promote inquisitive behaviours in our learners so that they have the confidence to question matters that are important to them. Our curriculum and staff challenge pupils to question who, when, where, how and (most importantly), why.
