Sunny Afternoon beekeeping with our Bee Buddy Mr Tett

Mr Tett, one of our beekeeping 'buddies' from Kendal beekeepers came to visit today to see how the children and bees were getting on.
He inspected Hive 2 with some of the children and couldn't believe how much nectar our bees were bringing in... (I think he was a bit jealous!) already the super we added last week is half full... with some of the honey already capped!   The children saw huge progress in Hive 1... with the Queen already laying in our 2nd brood box and honey being stored in the super.  He was also very impressed with the beekeeping skills of the children and all their knowledge.
Hopefully the weather will stay settled and our bees can continue their hard work...

Spring has sprung in the hives!

5/12/2018

Despite the 'patchy' start to the spring... our new bees are making the most of the good weather when they can.  Hive 1, from starting as  a 6 frame 'nuc' is now a fully fledged colony covering 10 frames.  Carniolan bees are famed for their 'explosive' spring build up of brood, and ours seem to be no exception!  We have now placed a second brood chamber on the hive to give the Queen plenty of room to lay her eggs...(and hopefully make it less likely for the colony to swarm.  Both our 'bee teams' are doing brilliantly in their beekeeping, confidently inspecting the bees and looking for 'Queen Cells' and other signs are bees are thinking of swarming... Nothing yet, so fingers crossed, they will be happy with all their extra space and stay at home!
Hive 2 is a little slower, but doing very well... we put our first 'super' on this week, the box where the bees will store their honey...(with a bit spare for us hopefully!)  4 days later with continued good weather, both hives are storing nectar to make into honey in the supers!

Her Majesty!

bThe Eagle eyed 'Bee Team' were quick to spot our Queen bee marching around on the comb today!    Queen bees are marked with a different colour, which indicates the year of their birth.  This not only helps spot her amongst a huge amount of bees... (up to 60,000 in the summer!) but allows us to tell her age.  Our Queen is a 'yellow' Queen, which means she was born last year in 2017... she is a disc marked Queen, (which looks a bit green)  Discs are VERY small plastic discs which are glued to the thorax, they don't hurt the queen at all, just make her easier to identify.   We mark our Queens with a drop of special paint, using a small 'cage' she is momentarily kept still for the paint to be dropped on.  The children were practising on drones today, so now we have LOTS of marked drones in the hive...!  ( I am sure they are all feeling very important now!!)
