Despite the 'patchy' start to the spring... our new bees are making the most of the good weather when they can. Hive 1, from starting as a 6 frame 'nuc' is now a fully fledged colony covering 10 frames. Carniolan bees are famed for their 'explosive' spring build up of brood, and ours seem to be no exception! We have now placed a second brood chamber on the hive to give the Queen plenty of room to lay her eggs...(and hopefully make it less likely for the colony to swarm. Both our 'bee teams' are doing brilliantly in their beekeeping, confidently inspecting the bees and looking for 'Queen Cells' and other signs are bees are thinking of swarming... Nothing yet, so fingers crossed, they will be happy with all their extra space and stay at home!
Hive 2 is a little slower, but doing very well... we put our first 'super' on this week, the box where the bees will store their honey...(with a bit spare for us hopefully!) 4 days later with continued good weather, both hives are storing nectar to make into honey in the supers!
