Our Vision, Ethos and Values

Our school is a dynamic place, with fantastic outdoor spaces and there is always something extra going on. I am extremely proud of our children who never cease to amaze with their sporting prowess in competitions, artistic creations, drama performances and musical abilities, both in school and out.

To enhance the curriculum, every year group plan several visits each year and we regularly have exciting visitors to school. Children in Years 4, 5 and 6 enjoy residential visits each year and we try never to miss an opportunity to join in other events in and around Kendal.

Over recent years we have had children joining us throughout the year and across the year groups and the community always makes newcomers very welcome.

If you are new to Heron Hill or to the area, please accept my invitation to visit us to see what we are really like. I would be delighted to meet you and show you around the school.

For parents new to Nursery, you will find much more information here.

I look forward to meeting you soon.

Ian Murphy, Interim Headteacher
The exceptional ethos of the school: respect for all, working to the best of your ability and the exemplary behaviour, along with extremely high levels of care, have been consistently praised by Ofsted but more importantly, are regularly remarked upon by visitors to the school or wherever our children come into contact with the public.

Our school motto “learning together, playing together, growing together” is the goal we strive to achieve every day; to provide opportunities for each and every child to learn and develop fully and reach their potential to become confident and independent learners.
We want each and every child at Heron Hill School to:
  • Feel happy and safe
  • Respect and value themselves and others
  • Celebrate diversity in school, our community and beyond
  • Succeed through challenging and inspirational learning
  • Grow into independent and responsible individuals
  • Develop a lasting appetite for learning and to look forward to their future with confidence
We know every child is different and every child in our care is treated as an individual.  Our dedicated and experienced staff encourage children to believe, achieve and succeed.  We want our children to think big and adopt an 'I can' attitude, be tenacious, resilient and have a go.

British Values

There is no place for extremist views of any kind in our school, whether from internal sources (pupils, staff, visiting adults, governors etc) or external sources (school community, external agencies or individuals).

Any prejudice, discrimination or extremist views, including derogatory language, displayed by pupils, staff, visitors or parents will always be challenged and, where appropriate, dealt with.  Where misconduct by a teacher is proven, the matter will be referred to the National College for Teaching and Leadership for their consideration.  Misconduct by other staff will be dealt with under normal school disciplinary procedures.

We encourage pupils to respect the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.  We ensure that partisan political views are not promoted in the teaching of any subject in the school and where political issues are brought to the attention of the pupils, reasonably practicable steps are taken to offer a balanced presentation of opposing views to pupils.
